Russia’s relations with South Africa can be traced back to the early 1960s, when the African National Congress of South Africa established its relations with the Soviet Union. Within next 30 years, the Soviet Union provided ANC with important moral and material assistance, especially weapons and equipments. From the mid-1980s, the relationship between Soviet Union and the ANC had gone through new changes, there was a positive interaction between the united-front strategy of the Soviet Union and the diversification strategy of the ANC, which created a more suitable environment for democratic reforms in South Africa. However, the Soviet Union’s role in the foundation of the majority-ruled South Africa should not be overestimated. In fact, the relations between the Soviet Union and the ANC cooled down in the late 1980s, which directly impacted the Russia-South Africa relations thereafter.   【Аннотация】Отношения России с Южной Африкой можно проследить ещё в начале 1960-х гг., когда начали развиваться отношения между Советским Союзом и Африканским Национальным Конгрессом. В почти 30-летний период Советский Союз предоставил АНК важную моральную и материальную помощь, особенно оказал помощь в форме предоставления оружия и снаряжения. Начиная с середины 1980-х гг. в отношениях между Советским Союзом и АНК произошли новые изменения, произошло положительное взаимодействие советской стратегия союзников и стратегии диверсификации АНК, что создало благоприятные условия для демократических реформ в Южной Африке, однако роль Советского Союза в создании новой Южной Африки не следует переоценивать. На самом деле в конце 1980-х гг. наблюдалась тенденция охлаждения отношений между Советским Союзом и АНК, что оказало прямое воздействие на последующие отношения между Россией и Южной Африкой.
