James Billington is one of the world’s leading experts on Russia and has been a policy advisor to Presidents and Congressmen as well as leaders in the academic, ecclesiastical and private sectors. This article attempts to interpret his Russian cultural studies and of those influenced by him through his three classic works on Russian culture, namely, the “the Icon and the Axe” (1966), “the Face of Russia” (1998) and “Russia in Search of Itself” (2004). Billington forms a unique understanding of Russian culture through interdisciplinary research methodology: three core elements of Russian culture including special feelings towards nature, Eastern Christendom and impact of the West; each form of Russian culture experienced three stages of “imitation - innovation - to destroy”; the development of Russian culture and its political process shares the similar structure; attaches great importance to the Silver Age, holding its cultural achievements are closely linked with those of the Soviet era. 【Аннотация】Джеймс Биллингтон является ведущим специалистом современного изучения России на Западе. Проведя анализ трёх его классических исследований русской культуры, можно увидеть, какова русская культура в его глазах и глазах других западных учёных, находящихся под влиянием его взглядов. Биллингтон придерживается междисциплинарных методов исследования, образуя уникальное понимание русской культуры: особые чувства к природе, православная вера и циклический характер страсти относительно новых предметов внешнего мира формируют три основных элемента русской культуры; каждая из форм культуры России переживает три этапа «имитация — инновации — уничтожение»; развитие русской культуры обладает структурным сходством с политическим процессом России; придаётся большое значение Серебряному веку, считается, что культурные достижения Серебряного века тесно связаны с культурным развитием советского периода.
