Convergence or Competition? Russia, China and the Balance of Power in Central Asia

Abstract

In recent years, the geopolitical environment in Central Asia has become increasingly complex, where traditional geographical relations was broken while new geopolitical relations has not been formed yet. Due to changes in power relations between China and Russia and their different and similar goals in Central Asia as well, convergence and competition between these two countries appear in Central Asia. Meanwhile, the SCO, as the common platform of China and Russia in Central Asia, also faces complicated prospects. With uncertainties increasing in the future, Central Asia may become a more complex “stage”.
